Question 5 on Tuesday's ballot asks voters: Do you want to change the medical marijuana laws to allow treatment of more medical conditions and to create a regulated system of distribution?

One of Maine's top advocates for the use of medical marijuana is Don Christian.

He's the leader of Maine Vocals, a group formed to legalize pot.

Christian says Question five needs to be defeated.

The bill, if passed, would allow dispenseries for medical marijuana, with a $5,000 fee to open one and regulation by the Department of Health and Human Services.

"Nobody knows what they're voting on except everyone seems to be in favor of medical marijuana, but do they really know what they're voting on? Once the people hear that DHS is going to be controlling this bill they're changing their minds. This is going to set us back and people will be sorry if this gets voted in," Said Christian on Monday.

Jonathan Leavitt heads up the group Maine Citizens for Patients' Rights and says the proposed law is one that was well-thought out.

Leavitt says the issue is a medicinal one and that's why D.H.H.S. was chosen to have oversight. Leavitt says the other option was the department of public safety.
