There's a lot of good fishing holes in Ellsworth, if you know where to look.

Joy Hollowell found one along the Union River that's prime pickings for rod and fly fishing.

That's where she met up Matthew for this week's Thursday's child.

13-year old Matthew is more than just a fan of fishing.

He's hooked on it.

"it's fun, you get to learn different kinds of fish, what fish eat, what kind of bait to use," says Matthew.

Matthew enjoys casting with a rod and reel, but his true passion is...

"fly fishing.

I ask him why?

"I have to say, I can't tell you. I just love it, it's just so much fun," Matthew replies.

This fishing fanatic showed me some of his collection of flies.

"I made this one, it's destroyed because this is the one I caught my bass on," explains Matthew.

An 18 inch long bass, to be exact.

When Matthew isn't fishing, he enjoys reading, sort of.

"I like books on tapes. Right now, I'm listening to Harry Potter, just got done listening to My Side of the Mountain and My Side of the Mountain Two, and now I'm going on to Frightful Mountain," says Matthew.

Matthew is in the 8th grade and says he likes some parts of school.

"I like science and gym, and then I would have to say recess and then lunch."

He also likes art. Matthew won second place in a county-wide contest last year. His entry probably won't surprise you.

"I did a drawing of trout underneath the water," Matthew says.

Matthew is a polite and patient young man who isn't afraid to speak openly about his desire for a dad.

"I was put in adoption when I turned four and I've been on the move, looking for a family for about nine years.

I ask him this question...

"What are some things you're missing, that you'd think..."

"Having a father," says Matthew, "like a real father, that will do stuff with me like take me hunting, fishing, do father stuff, do baseball games, stuff like that."

Matthew says he'd be happy with just a dad, but wouldn't mind a mom as well.

"Right now, it doesn't really matter, as long as I have a family," he says.
