Charter Schools in Maine?

There are five-thousand charter schools in the U.S. There are none in Maine.

On Wednesday, legislators and educators met in Augusta to try and change that.

They believe public charter schools in Maine can help to stem the tide of high school & college dropouts.

The group also says such schools could start the flow of millions of federal dollars to Maine for public education.

Roger Brainerd heads up the Maine Association for Charter Schools.

"One of the benefits of the charter school program is that there's between 400 and 700 thousand dollars available for a group that wants to start a public charter school for startup and planning costs and this is supplied by the federal government as an incentive."

Brainerd's goal is to get this issue before lawmakers in January.

To do that, he would have to have the governor sign on to the idea.

That has yet to happen.
