Possible Changes to Maine's Fireworks Law on Hold Until Next Year

3

Augusta - Mainers hoping for changes to the state's fireworks law will have to wait - at least until next year.

A legislative committee voted Monday to delay action on four bills that would restrict the use of fireworks.

Representative Corey Wilson says, instead, lawmakers agreed to set up a committee to study the concerns of business owners, residents and fire officials.

Some Mainers have lodged complaints about noise and safety.

But business owners say they've invested a lot of money in opening fireworks stores after the state repealed a ban in 2011.

Wilson says lawmakers might get preliminary feedback on the study in May but they don't expect concrete information until January or February.

He says the committee will ask that all fireworks bills be carried over to the second regular session then.
