Literary Skills to Fund Cancer Center

Students in Bradley are using their literary skills to fight disease.

After months of fund raising, kids from Viola Rand Elementary reached their goal of collecting $1,000 for the new Raish Peavey Haskell Children's Cancer and Treatment Center in Brewer.

On Monday they presented a check during an Eastern Maine Medical Center Heroes, Hope, and Healing assembly.

The kindergarten through fourth graders wrote an essay about a hero of theirs, reaching out to friends and family for donations.

Schools administrators tell us they try and instill a sense of respect, responsibility, caring and knowledge with their students.

The students also creatively expressed their compassion. They made a thousand paper cranes to be displayed at the hospital.

As a mother of one of these children, I am very proud of the work they did to help out. However, the fundraiser was only for a few weeks, not months and the entire school was involved including the pre-kindergarten class. My daughter is in the afternoon class and was very excited about the entire experience.
