Bath - Crews from both the Bath Fire and Police Departments rescued a 13-year-old boy from an ice floe Saturday afternoon on the Kennebec River.

Bath Fire Department Capt. Mike Clarke said the boy was riding an ice floe when he fell into the Kennebec River. Police Chief Michel Field said a passerby spotted the boy just north of the Sagadahoc Bridge.

Field said the current in that part of the river was very strong.

The boy then jumped onto another ice floe, Clarke said.

When the fire department arrived, two police officers and an ambulance were on scene according to Clarke.

Crews threw a rope to the boy and a crew member climbed onto a nearby ice floe. Crews were then able to pull the boy closer to shore before using a ladder to get him back on land.

Clarke said the Bath Iron Works rescue boat, which is a 24-hour security boat, was dispatched but was not needed.

The boy, according to Clarke, was in good spirits and was not suffering from hypothermia.

His father spoke to police and emergency crews on the scene.

Field said the situation could have been tragic if the resident hadn't spotted the boy and the fire department hadn't responded so quickly.
