Documentary Sheds Light on Dog Training

3

Bangor - Dog Owners are getting a lesson in tough love for their four-legged friends.

Green Acres Kennel hosted a screening of a documentary called "Tough Love: A Meditation on Dominance and Dogs."

The film disputes the concept of the alpha dog, the act of building dominance over pets.

Historical studies of wolf packs in the 1940s have proven to be inaccurate.

The documentary calls the concept a myth and encourages positive reinforcement instead.

The director of the documentary Chad Montrie said, "It doesn't have any scientific validity anymore and it shouldn't be apart of the way that people think about their relationship with their dog."

Green Acres Kennel Shop co-owner Don Hanson said teaching this area about pet obedience is crucial.

"An educated population makes better decisions and that's going to be better for them and better for their pets," Hanson said.
