Problem Gambling Forum Held In Waterville

Waterville - The gaming industry is quickly growing in Maine. Thursday at the Waterville Armory in Waterville, the first ever conference on problem gambling was held.

Maine native Lesa Densmore was the keynote speaker.

Densmore, a former standout athlete at the University of Maine, discussed her experiences as a gambling addict.

Densmore discussed, among other things, the signs gamblers should be on the lookout for to see if they have problem. "The thing you want to pay attention to is how are you responding to the reaction of being in the casino," she said. "Are you chasing your losses? Are you leaving the casino and losing sleep over thoughts of going back? Are you not paying your bills because you feel you need to take money to go salvage your losses?"

Representatives from Maine's casinos were on-hand to discuss how casinos are helping gambling addicts find help. "We believe we have a responsibility to our patrons to give them some awareness on the issue. Give them the vehicles to contact people of they feel they have a problem," said Peter Martin of the Oxford Casino.
