ACLU Happy with Passage of School Restraints Amendment

3

Augusta - The state's education committee has passed an amendment updating the existing rules regarding use of restraints in classrooms.

The ACLU of Maine had urged committee members to reject the current version of the bill that ACLU members say would have gutted protections for students.

"We are thrilled that the committee and key stakeholders worked together on a compromise that is good for both teachers and students," said Shenna Bellows, executive director of the ACLU of Maine. "The issue of restraints in the classroom has spurred a great amount of thoughtful dialogue, and we are confident that this outcome protects safety and civil liberties for teachers and students.

The amendment passed on Wednesday requires the Department of Education to develop guidance for teachers and school districts on the new rules.
