Preventing Medicare And Medicaid Fraud Panel In Bangor

3

Bangor - Fighting fraud was the main topic at the Hammond Street Senior Center in Bangor Wednesday.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and local experts were on hand to speak to seniors.

The event was all about preventing fraud for beneficiaries and providing the tools necessary to make seniors aware of the signs of fraud.

Nearly a billion dollars worth of claims is processed every day.

Experts say that although most providers are honest, a small percentage try to abuse the system.

"It's important for our beneficiaries to know that they need to review the procedures, and the results, and the tests that were done on them when they saw their provider, and make sure that what they're being charged for is tests that were actually done so we're not losing money from the Medicare system that we need to be using," said the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Regional Administrator, Raymond Hurd.

Experts say the more educated everyone is about fraud, the easier it is to keep it from happening.
