Bangor -
A scary scene unfolded on Broadway in Bangor during Monday's morning commute but it could have been much worse when a car left the road, and crashed into the gas pumps at the Irving Circle K.
"It tore the fuel pump off, and we've transported one occupant to the hospital we really don't know what caused the accident we haven't been looking into that," said Bangor Assistant Fire Chief Tom Higgins.
When the pump was knocked off, fuel began spilling out and onto the ground, which was another issue fire crews dealt with.
"We've been dyking up the fuel so to absorb all the fuel that we can here in the parking lot," said Higgins. "With the snow and the moisture around it makes it look a lot worse than it is."
According to Higgins crews had more problems because the car clipped a utility pole too. "Because the car as it went off the street it hit a guy wire it went up and entangled in the power wires way up high so there's been a local outage."
About 1100 customers were impacted, and the traffic lights were shut off because of it, Bangor Hydro crews restored the power about an hour later. All in all, while it was a bad accident, it could have ended much differently said Higgins.
"This is one of those situations that because of the safety features the quick actions of the employees and a little bit of luck that this is going to be a lot better outcome than what could have happened. There could have been a significant fire if not for those things."
Police say the driver of the car, Timmy Dailey, 38, of Bangor, told them his foot became caught in the accelerator, causing the crash.
Police say they have charged Dailey with possession of a schedule W drug after finding hypodermic needles and a pill identified as aderall in the car.
