Trooper Injured After Crash in Presque Isle

3

Presque Isle - A state police trooper was air lifted to the hospital after being involved in a car crash in Presque Isle Monday afternoon.

Authorities say Trooper Shawn Whalen was driving on Route 1 when he attempted to make a U-Turn in the roadway.

His cruiser turned in front of another car travelling behind the trooper and the driver told authorities he couldn't stop in time.

Trooper Whalen was injured in the hip. He was taken to a local hospital and then flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The other driver had a minor injury to his hand.

We're told Trooper Whalen's K-9 was also in the cruiser, but not injured.

That area of Route 1 was closed for about two hours while authorities investigated.

this is exactly what happens when troopers have no regard for others around them...some of them think they don't have to abide by any rules and are so concerned about giving someone a ticket, they endanger the lives of others

My thought was we can't do u turns, but it's ok for them to whip around anytime they please! Hmmmm

People that live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks!!! I bet if you were in desperate need of a State Trooper you would be more than happy for him to do what ever it took to get to you as quickly as possible!! Yes, that would include a U-turn!!!
They risk there lives every day to keep us safe in more ways than you can imagine! Instead of commenting on his driving, why don't we all thank God for saving his and the other drivers life and pray that his recovery is speedy!

Has anyone out there ever heard of assured clear distance? It means simply don't follow to close! If the driver following the tropper couldn't avoid a car making a u-turn folks "He was following to close!"

Why don't you be respectful of the families and not comment negative things! Yes, he is a state trooper and not everyone likes cops. But, EVERYONE makes mistakes. He still has a family and deserves just as much RESPECT as anyone else. Think before you speak and try to be considerate of others!

everyone has negative comments because he was making a U-turn... I, as a driver in Maine, realize they make sudden turns at anytime... people should be more aware of them and give them distance... remember, it is illegal to tailgate... and what if he was turning around to help save the life of one of ur loved ones... that would make it ok then wouldnt it..
