Maine Chief Justice Briefs Lawmakers In Augusta

3

Augusta - Maine's top judge briefed lawmakers on the state of the judiciary Thursday.

Maine Chief Justice Leigh Saufley addressed a joint gathering of the Maine House and Senate.

She talked about Maine's newest courthouses, including the new facility currently under construction in Augusta, and also praised jurors for their service.

Saufley thanked the governor, and the legislature, for providing funds to keep Maine's courts safe. "Governor LePage has once again placed additional dollars in the proposed judicial brach budget sufficient to provide almost 70% entry screening in the next biennium. Governor on behalf of all the people who deserve safety in Maine's courts, you have my gratitude," Saufley said.

The Chief Justice also addressed domestic violence in her speech, saying Maine has gotten better in this area but we still have work to do.
