Folks Take An Icy Dip In Dedham For A Good Cause

3

Dedham - Saturday at Phillips Lake in Dedham was the annual Freezin' for a Reason Polar Dip.

People were braving the water to help raise money for kids to enjoy the outdoors this summer at Camp Capella and Camp Sunshine.

"It's a great cause. You know, Camp CaPella, they want disabled kids to come down here and enjoy the outdoors, which they wouldn't be able to do if this wasn't here," said Brian Lachapelle, a polar-plunger and member of the Bangor Fire Department.

"It's great to see people coming out and supporting these camps the way they do," said Dana Mosher, the executive director of Camp CaPella.

"It's for such a great cause we're in there for seconds and we're out. We get in the hot tub and warm up. Actually, I'm still shivering, but the kids we do it for have disabilities and life threatening illnesses that they never get over and we get over this in a few minutes," said Joe Dowling of the Hampden Kiwanis Club.

"It takes a lot of courage to get in something that's very cold," said Riley Dunton, who watched his dad, Joe Dunton, take the plunge.

"It kind of goes against what you think would be fun, but there's something about it that's fantastic," said Dunton.

Camp directors are hoping to raise around $10,000 for each camp this year.

"It's pretty neat to watch people jump in and jump out and not mind standing in the cold and freezing for a few minutes. It was an awesome show of support it's so heart warming to see so many people come out," said Ashley Caswell, events coordinator for Camp Sunshine.
