Bangor -
115 years later, The Maine is remembered.
A memorial was held Friday in Bangor to remember the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor on in 1898.
260 sailors died that day and six others eventually died from injuries.
The VFW held its annual ceremony at Davenport park where you'll find part of the old ship.
"We do the ceremony here, because if you look at the front of the monument, the actual bow piece of the USS Maine that was taken off the Maine and brought up here and put in the park," said Ronald Smith, junior vice commander for the Department of Maine VFW.
The true cause of what sank the battleship was never determined.
One theory is that an enemy mine exploded. Another focuses on an internal explosion.
Many believe it played a part in starting the Spanish-America War.
