Bangor Daily News Under Siege After Requesting Gun Owners Private Information

3

Augusta - Republicans in Augusta are outraged at the Bangor Daily News after the newspaper requested the names and addresses of all concealed weapons permit holders in Maine.

Republican leadership, along with Governor Lepage and organizations like the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, have come out swinging against the newspaper, saying Mainers deserve better. "They expect news," said Mike Thibodeau, a Winterport Republican. "They don't expect them to engage in tabloid type activity and this is beneath the Bangor Daily News to engage in this activity in my opinion. I would encourage them to abandon this process and let us go about our work."

It all stems from the Freedom of Access Act, or FOAA, request, the newspaper filed with multiple police organizations.

In the request, the Bangor Daily asks police to make available for inspection and copying the names, addresses and dates of birth of Maine’s concealed weapons permit holders.

This request comes on the heels of Augusta Republican Corey Wilson’s bill that would make that information private. Wilson said he proposed the bill after a New York newspaper published the names and addresses of concealed weapons permit holders in that state. Wilson said police in New York arrested a man carrying the newspaper's list around and burglarizing those houses. "In New York they used geocoding and overlaid it over a Google map, so you had a nice Google map of where everyone who had a concealed weapons permit was located," Wilson said. "The result of that is you had people who were threatened. Their lives their families lives were threatened. That to me is unacceptable and we need to prevent that from happening in the state of Maine."

Republicans say the BDN request does nothing more than harass law abiding gun owners and fan the political flames. "In the light of Newtown, our country and certainly our state is at a time when issues of gun ownership at the top of the political agenda. But it's not a time when we should be politicizing it," said Republican House Minority Leader Ken Fredette. "This request today we believe, politicizes it. It makes it worse."

Republicans called on Democrats to help them fast track the bill to help shield this information. "This is not something that the entire Democratic leadership has taken up," said Skowhegan Democrat Jeff McCabe. "This is definitely me speaking at first read of this issue and reacting to the BDN. I have a meeting later on and I will discuss this matter with the speaker."

McCabe added that he does believe the private information of concealed weapons permit holders should remain private. Representative Wilson said his bill has roughly 60 co-sponsors, including Democrats.

Governor Lepage has also weighed in on the subject. “If newspapers would like to know who has concealed weapons permits, then they should know the Governor has his," Lepage said in a statement. "I have serious concerns that BDN’s request will incite fear among gun owners and non-gun owners alike regarding their safety. There is no reason why these records should be public and I encourage the Legislature to act quickly to make this personal information confidential."

The Bangor Daily News released an editorial statement on its website Thursday afternoon trying to explain their actions to outraged readers. "The BDN requested the records of concealed weapons permits as part of long-term reporting projects on domestic violence, sexual assault and drug abuse," the statement written by staffer Anthony Ronzio reads. It goes on to say, "The BDN has never had any intention to release identifying information about permit holders, and said so in our request. We recognize how sensitive this information is, and made sure police agencies knew of this intent."

Republicans and others are calling on the newspaper to withdraw the request. Even if Wilson's bill passes, Republicans say it probably wouldn't be soon enough to keep police from being forced to comply with the BDN's wishes, unless the paper acquiesces to the pressure and withdraws the request.

I'm sorry but why again is it just Republicans that are outraged? Are the democrates no longer interested in protecting peoples rights? Where are the democrates that used to fight civil rights of all Americans? Just a bunch of worthless cowards!

People who bother to get concealed weapons permits are not the problem. If anyone takes the time to obtain a CCW it usually means they are beyond reproach, are law abiding citizens and do not mind going through the process of obtaining a permit.. People with ill or evil intent are not going to bother going through the process of obtaining a concealed weapons permit, they are just going to carry the weapon whether they have a permit or not. People intent on doing someone bodily harm are not concerned about laws. Wrongdoers could care less whether a school, a workplace, an airport terminal or government building is a gun-free zone.

Why is the press entitled to private information and given the right to force law enforcement agencies to give up records of law abiding citizens? Does that also go to say that I am afforded that same right and can walk into my local police station and insist on getting private information on anyone I wish? The Bangor Daily News cherishes their first amendment right and profits from it everyday. It is very clear that The Bangor Daily News does not value or appreciate the second amendment right. How dare you pry into our private lives and try to expose law abiding citizens like common criminals? Well Bangor Daily News, when you choose to print the list of all concealed weapons permit holders, be prepared. Be ready to bare the weight of all the innocent citizens who are far more likely to be victimized when local criminals target the homes without known weapons protecting them.

Has the BDN ever asked for a list of vehicle registrations? Ever published a list of DUI convictions? Ever requested a list of sex offenders? Convicted felons? The timing of these requests has more to do with making a political point than reporting the news. It's a sad stunt at best and not even an original idea.

I am beginning to read this morning on social medias that many citizens are not only going to boycott the paper but those who advertise with them as well. What a shame BDN has put citizens and advertisers in this position!

I seriously hope that law enforcement agencies, delay the release of private information to BDN. It is absurd to think that the BDN wants to use this information for domestic violence, sexual assault and drug abuse correlations when these types of crimes are committed by criminals. Persons whom have the concealed firearms permits are more than likely not breaking any laws. If the BDN wishes to invoke their freedom of speech. I wish to invoke my right to privacy.

I have already called and cancelled our Subscription. Frankly, we are shocked that the BDN decided to do this. We have already cancelled the Times Record and the Portland Press Herald and no longer watch NBC News because of their liberal biases.

I guess that News people just have different DNA than the rest of us. They probably actually believe that they have no bias. We don't believe that the BDN would not reveal our name and address if they succeed in getting the info. It sounds like both R's and D's are going to get behind this. Please hurry!

A SAD attempt to keep a dying media format alive....other than sad, the only other word that comes to mind is BOYCOTT......

So the "newspaper" wants date of birth, name and address? To report on crime. Right.

Sounds more like Identity Theft, but it's really just intimidation. Expose the evil gun owners. Ostracize them; make them wear a scarlet letter "G".

Liberalism; not just a mental illness anymore.

For even attempting a stunt like that, anyone who subscribes to the BDN should cancel their subscriptions. It's all about the almighty dollar, and what will sell newspapers. Hit them where it hurts them.

The BDN has a 1st. amendment right protecting it from censorship. We have the right to buy the BDN and support advertisers doing business with this or any other newspaper. I choose to never again buy the BDN and will no longer support any business advertising in the BDN. That's my and everyone elses right!
John Nicolai John Nicolai 02/15/2013 11:19 am

How has BDN become so unattached to the community? Have they lost their minds by trying to do this? Was this an attempt to gain readers by joining the controversy? It is a sad day when a pillar within the community turns against it's people. Shame on you BDN.
Charles Charles 02/15/2013 10:53 pm
this is bull----! its nobodys business who has a concealed weapons permit....you have to go through a FBI background check to get one and several training courses. Bangor Daily News should be ashamed of themselves! they tried to defend their request for this PRIVATE information by saying they werent going to publish it, just comparing names to known domestic offenders and other criminals, because of COURSE anyone who has a concealed weapons permit MUST have a criminal background! WTF
