Maine People's Alliance Hosts State House Rally Opposing LePage Budget Cuts

3

Augusta - More than 50 towns in Maine have signed resolutions opposing Governor LePage's plan to eliminate state revenue sharing with municipalities.

Tuesday in the Hall of Flags, the Maine People's Alliance held a rally trying to convince more towns to join in.

City and town officials also spoke about the impact the cuts could have in their communities.

Charlotte Warren, mayor of Hallowell, said that town would lose $547,000 under the LePage plan. "That is $230 for each person, both adults and children," Warren told the crowd. "It is equal to the rough equivalent of the high school and middle school math programs and the entire high school English department."

The group played a video that surfaced earlier this week of Paul LePage when he was the mayor of Waterville back in 2009.

In the video LePage speaks passionately in opposition to a plan that is similar to what he is now proposing.
