Augusta -
Environmental advocates were at the State House Thursday urging lawmakers to support four bills they're calling their top priorities.
The bills seek to strenghthen the pit mining bill passed last session, promote energy efficiency, and help restore river herring to the St Croix River.
Supporters who showed up are hoping, with most of the talk in Augusta centered around jobs and the economy, that the environemnt won't get lost in the shuffle. They say a healthy environment and a strong economy can go hand-in-hand. "Some of these issues we've seen before. A lot of them have a history. But we think there are a couple of things that need to be tweaked. Certainly the mining bill. The legislature doesn't always get it right the first time. I think this is another opportunity to take another look. Strengthen some of those water quality standards," said Maureen Drouin of the Maine Conservation Alliance.
All four bills will head to committee where public hearings will be scheduled. To learn more about any of these four proposals, you can go to LYour text to link...
