Lawmakers Look At Extending Liquor Sales On Sunday Morning

3

Augusta - AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A legislative committee is taking up a bill to allow sales of liquor on Sunday mornings, which would lift a longstanding blue law that barred sales between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.

The bill, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Paul Gilbert of Jay, would also allow alcohol to be sold starting at 5 a.m., instead of 6 a.m. other days of the week.

Supporters told the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee on Wednesday that some workers end long shifts early Sunday morning, and they're not able to buy a drink after working their Saturday night shift. The bill would also give an extra edge to convenience stores.

Representatives for the Maine Restaurant Association and convenience stores both appeared in favor of the bill. No one spoke against it.

do any of the politicians realize that alcohol is ALWAYS THROWN IN THE FACE OF any consumer, including alcoholics - - - litererally you can not even get gas for your vehicle without alcohol ads being shown, go get groceries - alcohol end cap first isle, three isles later is the wine isle, three isles later hard liquor, three isles later then beer - people always complain about 'drug addicts' GUESS WHAT - alcohol and tobacco are DRUGS, and the state of Maine condones those drugs and actively makes money off of those sales - does anyone realize alcohol addiction and withdrawal can kill, and as a rule heroin and other drugs feels worse but doesn't have the 'deadly' (unless an overdose) factor than alcohol can - and the state wants to make it available 3 more earlier hours on sunday - THINK ABOUT IT - that means alcohol cannot be purchased legally between 1am and 6am for 7 days a week, other drugs (pot. oxy, vicodin, etc) are illegal all of the time unless you have a valid prescription - i wonder if any research has been done on the percentage of alcoholics reside in the state of maine and other new england states (assuming alcoholics are being completely honest) per capita . . .just sayin . . .
