Former Treasurer of Two Bangor Organizations Accused of Taking Money from Groups

3

Bangor - The former treasurer of the Bangor-Breakfast Kiwanis Club and Greater Bangor 4th of July Corporation is accused of taking more than $100,000 from the organizations.

Bruce Fowle, 62, of Bangor is charged with theft. A Penobscot County Grand Jury indicted him on Wednesday.

Fowle was reportedly taking the money for several years.

The investigation began in August when members of the organizations realized money was missing.

" We are saddened to learn that a fellow volunteer for the Fourth of July Corporation has violated our trust and the trust of our donors and residents of the area, who depend on us for the Independence Day festivities," said Tony Bernatche, president of The Greater Bangor 4th of July Corporation. " We struggle each year to bring the best possible event to the Bangor and Brewer areas, and part of that struggle is the funding- last year's fireworks alone cost $20,000."

Fowle is no longer involved with either organization.

The organizations have implemented new internal procedures to prevent something like this from happening again.

Penobscot County Deputy District Attorney, Mike Roberts, says none of the money has been returned.

At this time, there is no court date set for Fowle.
