Bangor -
Local basketball players headed to Bangor High School on Sunday to shoot some hoops.
It's part of the Elks Maine Finals Free Throw Hoop Shoot. Over 3 million 8 to 13 year olds participate nation wide, but here in Bangor, boys and girls were giving the contest a shot.
The director of the competition says it's about a lot more than basketball.
Richard Blinn, New England Regional Hoop Shoot Director "Once they reach the level of regional or a national contest, they get to sit down with kids from other areas and we can't tell you how many kids have gone through the program that stay close with the other kids."
Winners from Sunday's competition will head to the state finals in Portland. The winner from that contest will go to the national competition on Springfield, Massachusetts.
Then overall champion will get their name in the basketball hall of fame.
