Bear Bill

3

Augusta - A state senator from Knox County is getting kudos from the Humane Society of the United States.

Senator Edward Mazurek is introducing legislation that would protect bears from what'd described as inhumane and unsporting practices.

Bear hounding and trapping would be prohibited, and repeat bear poaches would be subject to felony level penalties.

The legislation would also prevent the opening of a second, spring bear hunting season, since mother bears are typically nursing their cubs at that time.

Maine is the only state that allows recreational bear trapping and we're only one of four states to allow the trade of bear parts.
