Searsport -
A glimpse of what was once a thriving sardine industry in Maine has been handed over to a local museum.
For nearly a century the Peacock family operated the R.J. Peacock Canning Company in Eastport and Lubec.
They also had a sardine operation in Portland.
Now many of the photos, posters and business papers they collected over the years have been turned over the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searport.
The closing a couple of years ago of the last sardine cannery in Maine - and the country - prompted Robert and Jeanne Peacock to find a way to hold on to this history.
"It's a great snapshot of what this business was and to share that with the people because a lot of people are interested in this industry. And it was so important and to preserve it someplace save where it's accessible."
The artifacts will all be part of a permanent display at the museum called "Gone Fishing".
The photos will eventually be saved in the museum's digital collection, too.
The Penobscot Marine Museum is open from Memorial Day weekend to mid-October.
