Maine school districts say Gov. Paul LePage's proposed budget for the next two years will result in a $27 million tax shift to local property owners.
The Maine School Management Association says the budget cuts nearly $13 million through LePage's curtailment order, and also seeks to require school districts to contribute $14 million in teacher retirement costs.
The nonprofit group says the shift is compounded by proposed cuts in municipal revenue sharing of close to $200 million by suspending revenue sharing for two years.
LePage says these are challenging times and he must make sure the budget is balanced. LePage said state government must tighten its belt and local government must do the same.
