LePage Releases Supplemental & Biennial Budget Plans

Augusta - AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage says his two-year budget proposal includes some education cuts, but that general purpose aid would remain higher than it was when he took office.

Finance Commissioner Sawin Millet began briefing lawmakers Friday afternoon on the $6.3 billion budget for the two years beginning on July 1. The proposal would eliminate 200 jobs.

In a statement, LePage called it "an opportunity to redesign programs and right-size government."

The two-year budget addresses a projected shortfall approaching $130 million. Lawmakers will also need to find tens of millions of dollars more to cover cost overruns for social services.
