Old Town Man Sentenced to 7 Years for String of Home Burglaries

3

Bangor - A man accused in a string of burglaries, including one at the home of former Major League Baseball player Matt Stairs, pleaded guilty on Tuesday.

34-year-old Jamie Bouchard of Old Town had previously pleaded not guilty to multiple burglaries and thefts at homes in Bangor, Old Town and Corinth.

Police say tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and Matt Stairs' Major League Baseball championship rings were among the items taken.

A plea agreement was reached for a seven year sentence. Bouchard also has to pay more than $46,000 in restitution.

"That's a long sentence. Most burglaries don't get a sentence like that, but in this case 7 years was appropriate because of the value of the property stolen, the impact it had on the victims, and this defendant's long history of crime," said District Attorney Chris Almy.

In court on Tuesday, Judge William Anderson asked Bouchard if he felt bad for what he did to these people. Bouchard responded, "More than you know."

Bouchard's defense attorney Hunter Tzovarras said, "I think he has genuine remorse for his involvement in this. He did actually, as we talked about, he wrote a note and tried to commit suicide soon after. He's taking responsibility by pleading guilty and he's assisted in retreiving what property he could."

His wife, Andrea Bouchard, was sentenced in October to four months in jail for burglary and theft.
