Kennebec Valley Community College is moving closer to getting a first of its kind agriculture program off the ground.
It's thanks to a $100,000 they've recently received from Jane's Trust that will benefit efforts to establish a two-year degree program in Sustainable Agriculture at the College's new Harold Alfond Campus.
The money is earmarked for the purchase of a new tractor and the hiring of a farm manager to manage the 120 acre farm located near the campus of the Good Will Hinckley charter school.
Students will have the chance earn a two year degree through the program. "They'll be studying sustainable agriculture, which is going to include crop production, but also have a focus on business and entrepreneurship, because small farms are obviously the way to go in this state an we want to support that economic growth," said Kathy Englehart, the head of the math and science department at KVCC.
The farm manager job posting will soon be up on the KVCC website and the curriculum for the program has already been approved.
If they can secure more federal grant money, they hope to have the program up and running this fall.
