Maine state prosecutor Alan Kelley has retired after 33 years on the job.
The 62-year-old Kelley has most recently been acting district attorney for Kennebec and Somerset counties.
Kelley had been the go-to attorney for years in Kennebec County, taking on difficult cases involving more serious crimes and specializing in prosecuting people charged with child sexual abuse.
He tells the Kennebec Journal, among his greatest accomplishments is his office's establishment of the Children's Advocacy Center, located at MaineGeneral Medical Center's Waterville campus.
Kelley is not disappearing. He'll soon start a job as assistant counsel at the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar, an independent agency overseeing attorney conduct.
Former state legislator Maeghan Maloney, who beat Kelley in a Democratic primary, takes over the district attorney's office this week.
