AG Concludes Trooper's Actions Were Justified During Fatal Hermon Standoff

3

The Maine attorney general has concluded that a state trooper was justified in shooting a man in the leg who had pointed a gun at him during a standoff that ended with the man fatally shooting himself.

A report released Monday says Trooper Gregory Roy fired his revolver after 24-year-old Michael McKay fired two shots from his semi-automatic handgun in the direction of a police tactical team that was outside his home in Hermon the night of July 1. Seconds later, the report says McKay killed himself.

The report says at the time of the shooting, McKay had been drinking and was distraught over his broken marriage. He bought a handgun equipped with a laser sight and a box of ammunition earlier that day.
