New Year's Eve for many is a time of revelry and celebration.
Some in Bangor chose to send 2012 out with a morning run.
They were doing so as part of the Downtown Countdown in the Epic Finale, 5K Road Race.
"It's someplace between total chaos and a whole lot of fun, but definitely on the fun side of things," said Epic Sports owner Brad Ryder.
131 Runners and 4 Walkers took part this year and they did for a variety of reasons.
"I like to run a race every month of the year," said Robin Emery of Lamoine. "And this is the last one for December so I get my December race in, plus Finale's just fun, New Year's Day last day of the year, run a race."
Mary Carter of Ellsworth was walking because she and her friends were "Trying to get more fit, to be healthier for the New Year."
Others like Dave Samuelian of Bangor had other reasons for a New Year's Eve Morning Run. "This is like putting some calories in the bank for later on so we can celebrate and maybe not feel as guilty about it."
About 30 volunteers helped organize this 7th year of the race.
"In the first one." Emery recalled. "They had was in the afternoon around 4:30 and one woman wore a very nice ball gown to run the race."
No matter how they are dressed the proceeds are going to a good cause, said Ryder. "Generally in past years we've raised about $500 to be able to go towards local charities." "The ecumenical food cupboard at Hammond Street Church, also Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, have been two of our targets."
"Any time we can pay it forward is a good thing," said Carter.
The Men's winner of the race was Adam Goode of Bangor finishing in 15 minutes 31 seconds.
The Women's winner was Sarah Mulcahy of Baring Plantation, crossing the finish line in 20 minutes 33 seconds.
