Rangeley Lake - The body of a Southern Maine mother has been found after her son reported she crashed through the ice on Rangeley Lake on her snowmobile Sunday night and didn't come up.

Wardens found the body of 45 year old Dawn Newell of Yarmouth in Rangeley Lake around 11 a.m. on Monday.

The Maine Warden Service said Newell and her 16-year-old son, from Durham, were riding on separate snowmobiles early Sunday evening when the mother's machine crashed through the ice.

Officials said her son was following behind her and started to break through the ice, but he was able to jump to solid ice and get to shore, where he called 911.

Wardens say blowing snow may have limited visibility.

This is the first snowmobile fatality of the season.
