There are many of resources out there for you do your research and make sure your giving to real charities and not phony ones.
An online resource is Charity Navigator you can click here for a link to the website charitynavigator.org...
Another online resource is ftc.org and search "make donations count"a>
A couple of resources that you can call to get information on charities or to report fraud are the Department of Justice has a National Disaster Fraud toll free number 1-800-720-5271 and Maine Charitable Solicitations Program 624-8525.
