Brewer, Eddington, Holden, Milo, Orrington -
Six area Dunkin Donuts stores donated $10,000 Thurday to help fight cancer, thanks to a lot of cups of coffee.
The owners of the Brewer-area stores pledged to give one penny for every coffee sold this year to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Penobscot.
The Relay raises money for local cancer research and support programs for patients.
Throughout the year, the stores combined to sell about a 1 million cups of coffee.
Mike Openshaw, a cancer survivor, says "Just think that one of those pennies could be the cure to cancer. One of those pennies could make that difference. It's just amazing."
General Manager Robert MacDonald says, "We've had a lot of customers come in every day i've never even seen, walk right up to me and thank me personally for doing this. And they've become regular customers ever since."
Two Dunkin Donuts stores in Brewer, as well as the ones in Eddington, Holden, Orrington and Milo, took part in the fundraiser.
