State of Maine Buys Conservation Easement in the Grand Lake Stream Region

3

Grand Lake Stream - Maine conservation officials say the state has purchased a conservation easement on more than 21,000 acres in eastern Maine.

The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry says the easement in the Grand Lake Stream region guarantees public access on lands owned by The Lyme Timber Co. of Hanover, N.H., that are popular for hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and other recreational activities. It includes tens of miles of frontage on lakes and streams and gives the state the option to build a new carry-in boat launch on West Grand Lake.

The $19 million deal is being paid for with state, federal and private funding.

The Downeast Lakes Land Trust, which partnered with the state on the deal, is planning to establish a $200,000 endowment trust to support ongoing responsibilities on the land.
