Maine's U.S. Senate Race Cost $11 Million

3

Portland - Total spending for Maine's U.S. Senate campaign topped $11 million, with more than half of that attributed to outside groups.

According to final campaign finance reports filed last week with the Federal Election Commission, independent Sen.-elect Angus King raised a total of $2.8 million in his bid for the seat being vacated by Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Maine Today Media, reports Republican Charlie Summers raised about $1.1 million over the course of the campaign. Democrat Cynthia Dill raised roughly $170,600 for the campaign cycle.

Independent groups funneled $7.4 million into the campaign.

Total spending for the 2012 Senate campaign fell short of the $14 million spent during the 2008 campaign between Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Rep. Tom Allen.
