Searsport Students Learn about the Gift of Giving

3

Belfast - Among the shoppers strolling through downtown Belfast Tuesday were a few in the market for more than just a good deal.

With a budget of $620, a handful of classmates from Searsport District High School spent their day picking out toys at High Street shop, Out On A Whimsey.

"Some parents can't get them stuff like that. I just feel really good to be able to give it to them," said sophomore, Rachel Campagna.

This Christmas, struggling families in Waldo County will not have to worry about putting gifts under the tree for their kids thanks to the members of the high school's Life on Your Own class.

Junior, Alex Hooper, said, "I think it's a great time to give. No matter if it's your family, your community."

The group is lightening the burden on others with a pile of presents the shop sold to them at a 40% discount.

"I think it's important that they learn how to give instead of just, you know, take," explained Barbara Bubar, an ed tech at the school.

For the second year in a row, the students spent the fall fundraising to buy the presents for local charity, Wings of Love.

Bubar said, "Last year, we were able to buy $400 worth of toys. This year, we're going to surpass $1,000."

By the end of their afternoon of shopping, they managed to underscore the power of the gift of giving.

Store owner, Deborah Hall, said, "There are so many children out there that can't have things, and won't have things for Christmas, unless kids step up like this."
