Two men charged in connection with a home invasion over the weekend in Old Town were in court today.
According to police, 20 year old John Taylor and 30 year old Wayne Sanborn, both from Old Town, were arrested for robbing an elderly woman while she was sleeping.
Police say the two stole jewelry and other valuables from the home, then tried to sell them at a local antique shop.
The owner of the store alerted police. Sanborn was arrested there. Police say Taylor was arrested hiding inside the closet of a residence on Main Street in Old Town.
Authorities say this is a serious case.
"Well, because it happened at night, it happened at somebody's home, the homeowner was present, she was very scared, she's 78 years old, you know, she's easy prey for these individuals," said District Attorney Chris Almy. "They made comments either implicating themselves or the other in this case, but the evidence itself in terms of the recovery of the jewelry and the statements that they made to their friends about their plan to do this crime is the significant evidence that we're going to depend upon in this case."
Taylor had his bail set at 50 thousand dollars. Sanborn's is 40 thousand dollars.
The judge decided to make Taylor's higher because of his criminal history.
"I think what's particularly disconcerting about this case and others is that it appears that we're on a regular basis having people who are invading homes, or robbing businesses for the purpose of getting money to buy drugs," said District Attorney Almy. "And this is on the increase, it's taxing the police departments, it's taxing our office and to some degree it's becoming more and more difficult to the point where I don't know if we're going to be able to keep up with it and I'm concerned about that."
Both men were ordered to have no contact with the victim or each other.
They're due back in court in February.
