Governor Paul LePage has decided to move forward with temporary spending reductions.
LePage announced Thursday that he will temporarily reduce State spending by more than $35.5-million in the current fiscal year.
The current fiscal year ends June 30, 2013.
According to LePage staff members, Governor LePage is working with commissioners to identify areas where spending can be reduced, by way of a curtailment, to help ensure the State finishes the fiscal year with a balanced budget.
"I will be exercising my authority to reduce spending in the quickest manner possible. My commissioners and I are evaluating our options and we will put in place a plan that is practicable and follows the law," said Governor LePage.
We're told essential services like police and snow plowing will continue during the temporary order.
The curtailment will likely be issued next week. When it happens, the Governor is required by law to immediately notify the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House and the majority and minority leaders of the Senate and House of the specific temporary reductions made.
