Knox County Regional Airport Updates Safety Measures

3

Owls Head - The Knox County Regional Airport in Owls Head is taking new safety measures following a plane crash last month that killed three people.

Two students and a recent graduate of the University of Maine who were all members of the same fraternity died in the Nov. 16 crash when their plane hit a pickup truck that was crossing a runway on takeoff. The truck driver was cleared of wrongdoing.

Airport manager Jeff Northgraves says the new measures are scheduled to be introduced Thursday at a meeting of the airport advisory committee's subcommittee on operations safety and maintenance.

He tells The Portland Press Herald, they include flashing and rotating beacon lights on all airport vehicles and a new road at the end of the runway.

The crash remains under investigation.
