Brewer Working to Make Public Housing More Energy Efficient

3

Brewer - The Brewer Housing Authority is working on making its housing more energy efficient.

154 units owned by the department will be updated over the next year through an Energy Performance Contract set up with the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The updates will include new natural gas boilers, hot water heaters, and energy efficient appliances.

The housing authority took out a loan to pay for it, but is expecting a big pay back.

"We should be able to pay the loan, plus keep 25% of the savings here in the housing authority, which we expect over another 20-year period will be $500,000 that we can do other things with," said Gordon Stitham, Executive Director of the Brewer Housing Authority.
