Judge Orders Waterville Murder Suspect Held Without Bail
State Police say one man is dead and another man is in jail after a bar fight in Waterville.
Police say 26-year-old Justin Smith was fatally shot and the man police say pulled the trigger, 30-year-old Matthew Partridge of Winslow, is in custody.
The shooting happened just after 11:00 Tuesday night at You Know Who's Pub. Police say an altercation involving Smith and Partridge started inside the bar and spilled out into the Concourse area. One eyewitness said Partridge went to his truck to get a gun and, despite attempts to stop him, shot Smith.
Smith was taken to a local hospital where he died from his wounds.
Waterville Police and dispatch immediately put out a description of Partridge's pickup truck to area law enforcement. "At 11:26 a Maine State Trooper spotted a vehicle that matched that description on Route 8 in Smithfield. The vehicle also had a headlight out. A traffic stop was affected and it was determined that vehicle was the one involved in the shooting," said Lieutenant Chris Coleman of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit.
Coleman said Partridge was alone when he was arrested and was taken into custody without incident.
Police say the case is still under investigation. Coleman said the suspect's truck is being analyzed at the Maine State Police Crime Lab. An autopsy will be performed this afternoon on Smith.
Partridge is in custody at the Waterville Police Station. He will make his first court appearance Wednesday or Thursday and will eventually be transported to the Kennebec County Jail.
