Newly Elected Maine Legislature to be Officially Seated Wednesday

3

Augusta - The newly elected Maine Legislature, now back under Democratic control, is starting business for the 2013-14 session.

Republican Gov. Paul LePage on Wednesday morning will administer the oath of office to the representatives and senators who were elected last month. Democrats won back majorities in the House and Senate, which were in Republican hands for the last two years.

In a series of largely ceremonial events, the new lawmakers will elect their presiding officers and later the attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer and auditor.

Because Democrats now have a legislative majority, their candidates for those offices are virtually assured of winning on Wednesday. They include Matthew Dunlap for secretary of state, Janet Mills for attorney general, Neria Douglass for treasurer and Pola Buckley for auditor.
