As Roads Get Icy, State Troopers Advocate Safe Driving

3

Orono - As the temperatures get cooler this season and the roads get icier, it's important to remember to drive safely.

Maine state troopers recommend paying attention to the weather forecast and if it's going to be bad out there, just stay home if you can.

But if you have to get somewhere, make sure to clear off your windows and the top of your car before hitting the road, increase your following distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you, and of course, take it slow.

"Speed is a big part of it. You need to give yourself adequate time to get to where you need to go. You need to adjust your speed accordingly. The speed limit is the speed limit under optimal weather conditions, road conditions, traffic conditions. If any of those things are less than optimal a person needs to adjust their speed accordingly," said Trooper Michael Johnston.

Troopers say if you do lose control and end up off the road, the safest thing to do is to stay in your vehicle and call 911 for help.
