Bangor Residents Upset with "Holiday Tree"

3

Bangor - The tree standing in Bangor's West Market Square has been spreading more controversy than cheer since its arrival Tuesday. Officials with the city of Bangor have dubbed the 30 ft. balsam a "holiday tree," rather than a "Christmas tree," which sparked quite a debate on our Facebook page.

Wednesday, the name continued to prompt a spirited response from those passing through the city's downtown.

"I think it's stupid," said Edward and Anne Baker.

The couple wasn't alone with the sentiment.

Resident Miranda McLellan said, "If we were going to put a giant Menorah out there, we wouldn't call it a holiday Menorah, you know what I mean?"

But the response comes as a surprise to city officials, who said the change actually came some time ago.

"We've asked employees that have been with the city for 20 plus years, and no one really is certain when the change happened. So, it could be within the last five years, maybe ten or more," said Jason Bird, the city's Business Development Officer and Downtown Coordinator.

In fact, no one even seemed to know why it was done, other than to make downtown Bangor festive for everyone.

Bird said, "We've asked around and we think that it's because the city wants everyone to be able to to participate in the holidays, and we don't want to exclude other religions or those that don't necessarily celebrate Christmas."

Regardless of how or what you celebrate, city staff just hope the tree can stand for much more than just a name.

Call it a Christmas Tree. After all, if other religions do not celebrate Christmas, then it isn't a holiday for them right? This is just ridiculous.

Its a Christmas tree. If it were not for Christmas it would not be there.

The tree has no connection to any holiday other than Christmas. I just do not understand the logic, or lack of common sense, of those wishing to call it anything other than a Christmas tree.

This is without a doubt the stupidest decision that's ever been made!!! Christ was responsible for the "holiday" in the first place. What's the big problem with offending other religions? They don't have to participate..

THE REAL MEANING OF CHRISTmas IS CHRIST'S BIRTH.. ITS HAS BECOME SO COMMERCIALIZED AND SYMBOLIC THAT NO ONE JNOWS ANYMORE WHY WE ARE CELEBRATING IT. I DO... I happen to be paralized, going thu domestic abuse, no heat in the house it's 47 degrees in our house and all my daughter and I wanted for Thanksgiving and Christmas was Peace,Health, and each other ... were also facing eviction so yeah thinking about what to call a celebration, I think is we keep CHRIST'S name in it, all will go well it's his season.. He carries my happiness.

it had to do with being festive for the holidays. At least Bangor is doing something instead of being humdrum like it use to be. Bangor is trying to be festive. Too many people are becoming branches over silly details. Do your research on what a tree means. Its not even related to the "christian religion". a manger is the "Christ" representing holuday visual . Want a menorah then put one. want a Yule logs then put them. but gee whiz , people lighten up. there are better things to worry and complain about.
