Fatal Accident on I-95 in Alton

3

Alton - A fatal accident occured on I-95 southbound near mile marker 201 in the Alton area Friday morning.

Only one vehicle was involved and the initial investigation has State Police believing the driver lost control on a bridge in the area after hitting black ice and left the road.

The vehicle caught fire after leaving the road.

One male was taken to the hospital with what were described as serious injuries.

At this point no names have been released for either person involved, and we have not been told if the person killed was the driver or the passenger.

At the time of the accident the visibility was reportedly very low in the area because of the fog.

As state police investigate the accident the driving lane is closed to traffic.

"When you're coming up to the overpass, definitely slow down, take your foot off the accelerator because they're the first things that freeze up this time of year. Just coast over them instead of being under power," said Trooper Darren Vittum, with the Maine State Police.
