Thanksgiving Feast in Oakland

3

Oakland - More than 1,000 people in the Oakland area had hearty meals this Thanksgiving because of the generosity of volunteers.

For decades people have filled Messalonskee High School to get their fill of Thanksgiving dinner.

" I bet we feed anywhere from 900 to 1,000 people," said Mike Perkins, organizer of the event.

It takes a lot of volunteers and a decent amount of time to make sure everything is ready.

" We did most of the prep yesterday, it was about 8 1/2 hours," said Carol Godbout, the cook.

Volunteers cooked up thirty turkeys and too many fixings to count!

More than 500 meals were packed up and delivered to people who couldn't make it to the school.

" It's a community effort to help the community," said Perkins.

It's a way to stuff bellies, and hearts.

" I like helping people. I enjoy giving back to people, and there are a lot of people out there who need help, so why not help. It makes you fee good at the end of the day," said Perkins.

There were plenty of desserts at the feast, too. Girl Scouts from 7 central Maine troops whipped up 200 pies earlier this week.
