For the first time, state officials will be holding a lottery for elver gear and licenses.
Applications will be accepted until January 15th. The drawing will be February 15th.
The demand for elvers skyrocketed this year, hitting as high as $2,600 a pound.
Until the creation of a lottery by lawmakers this year, only those who already had licenses could renew them.
Now the Department of Marine Resources can pass out those licenses and gear that don't get renewed.
To take part in the lottery, you can fill out an application online at www.maine.gov/elverlottery. Or you can visit the DMR office in Hallowell.
