Local Family Driving Supplies to Hurricane Sandy Survivors

3

Bangor - Folks in the New York and New Jersey area are still cleaning up after Hurricane Sandy.

Mainers remain busy donating time and supplies to those in need.

One local family is hitting the road to help those in need.

"We started in Machias and we've go some stops all the way down 95 right through Conneticut then into Brooklyn, New York," said Matthew Bauman.

They're collecting everyday items.

“Clothes, blankets, shoes, pet food, garbage bags, bleach, there's even a few children's beds in there," said Matthew Bauman.

All of the items in the truck have been donated by Mainers and will go directly into the hands of Hurricane Sandy survivors.

"We probably started about two, two and a half weeks ago, and it just snowballed. We just started locally and we started with social media and it just took off and spread, from Calais to Connecticut and it's still building. People in Connecticut are still building, trying to meet the deadline," said Faye Mack.

"People want to help, they just don't know how and we have the flexibility of being self-employed, so we are able to put it together and get it down there," said Mack.

"I’m able to drive the truck down there, but I’m only as good as the donations that everybody has stepped forward to provide, and that's really what this is all about," said Bauman.

It’s a lesson in sharing and thanksgiving that can be passed down to their little ones. The Bauman’s are taking their daughters along for the ride.

"It’s wonderful. My family has always taught me that if you have enough of something, you share it. Even if you don't, if it can be split in half, you do it. If it's your energy, your time, you help others and to be able to teach that to them and have them carry that on, that's what it's all about," said Mack.

"All I could picture is what it would be like if my family was there, if we were there,"said Jill Stevens, of Orrington, who donated and helped collect items.

"It’s going to be a long trip, but it's going to be worth it," said Mack.

They expect to arrive in New York on Saturday.

You can donate items at the Hartland Volunteer Fire Station on Canaan Road from 11a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 11a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

There will also be a drop-off spot in Palmyra at Millenium on Ox Bow Road. You can donate there Friday from 11a.m. to 6 p.m.
