Orono -
A call center in Orono that was supposed to be hiring 400 people is no longer hiring.
NexxLinx of Maine was working with FEMA to set up a contact center for disaster victims to call.
The purpose was for people to be able to find out about federal disaster help and other relief programs.
TV 5 has learned FEMA has requested that Nexxlinx stop accepting applications.
When you call the NexxLinx office in Orono, you are connected to a recorded message stating, " Due to unforseen issues, FEMA has requested that we stop accepting applications at this time."
A NexxLinx Human Resources officer, Kim Williams says FEMA determined the agency's had enough applicants at this time to help the people in need. Williams said the applicants who applied for the anticipated work will receive telephone calls and letters explaining the change in plans.
Orono Call Center Hiring Hundreds for Hurricane Sandy Support

Aside from giving a lot of people false hope of a job, even temporary, and the damage to the image of a company that goes through the process of hiring people then sending them home, I can't help but wonder what this cost the taxpayers?
I am sure both the companies in Maine and Kentucky (and wherever else FEMA may have began this episode) will be billing heavily for the work performed in preparation.
Talk about Fraud, Waste and Abuse! No wonder the nation is broke.
