In the back room of the Aubuchon Hardware store in Belfast, the supplies in stock can't be taken at face value.
Belfast resident, Amy Slack, said, "We've got all sorts of stuff in here. It's really amazing."
The boxes of old coats and sweaters Slack is packing away are worth quite a bit to families hit by a storm that has cost them everything.
"There are people down there that have absolutely nothing. There's nothing left," said Slack, who has organized a relief effort for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
The former Long Island, New York resident turned Mainer wanted to do something for the families suffering.
Slack said, "On my block alone there was about five feet of water in my old house. I just wanted to help. I said, 'Well, what can I do from Maine?'"
She and some volunteers started collecting donations, and the community response has piled high.
"Just the knowledge that people everywhere around the country are behind the efforts to make sure that people are comfortable and safe, I think, makes a huge impact," said volunteer, Sarah Chapman.
The boxes will ship out from Belfast, Saturday night, carrying not just supplies and clothing, but a show of support that is invaluable.
"It really talks about the spirit of Maine," said Slack.
If you would like to help, you can drop off a donation at the back of the Aubuchon Hardware store on Northport Avenue in Belfast from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Saturday.
